Printer presets not saving

Since upgrading to Ventura, my printer presets are not saving. I already had working printer presets in place before upgrading, such as 2 page B&W from drawer three. Part of the preset works. It will print 2 page B&W, but it doesn't pull specifically from drawer three. I've only noticed a problem in the drawer selection and the scaling options. I tried creating new presets and those didn't work either. I also updated the driver and it didn't correct it.

I've read posts from other people will similar issues, but the only responses I see are how to set up a preset. Not knowing how to create a preset is clearly not the issue. It doesn't seem to be printer specific (this happens with my Brother printer and my Canon printer), nor computer specific (this happens with both of my Macs). I had hoped this would be fixed with 13.1, but the problem still exists. Any ideas?

Hi LemmyIan,

That was really helpful in that I think was able to narrow down the issue. Are you by any chance printing via AirPrint?

Per Canon's instructions I have been printing directly to the printer via the printer's IP address. Each time I choose a preset the tray is not remembered.

If I print via AirPrint the presets are remembered. The reason Canon wanted me to print to an IP is because their driver allows me to set specific paper types and weights. Not sure how important that is now. But is seems like AirPrint resolved the issue.

Thanks again for your help.

You may have used it for years but with each new system it becomes more destructive. It's. considered by most of the experienced contributors here to be akin to malware. Just do a google search: site: discussions.apple.com cleanmymac and you'll get a multitude of posts where CMM seriously compromised the system's or an apps performance.

Why? There is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This documents describe what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community and Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

User CMM's uninstler and then you can check to see if you've removed all of the supporting files by downloading and running the shareware app Find Any File to search for any files with the application's or the developer's name in the file name.  For CMM you'd do the following search(es):

1 - Name contains cleanmymac

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop or Trash bin in the Dock for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

I have absolutely no idea why, but after going to the Epson site & creating a ticket there, I was directed to some (automatic) things to try, one of which was to remove the printer & add back. I had done this multiple times before, but for some reason my presets are now staying .... for a couple of days now. I still can't see the color management/extra paper choices I had before, but at least this is something ....

Hi bvoyl,

If your printer presets are not saving, we'd recommend first following the steps outlined here and make sure you're following exactly as outlined: Save frequently used print settings for routine printing on Mac

This will ensure that things are set properly. If you're already doing that, and still have issues; we'd recommend reaching out directly to Apple to look into this with you further to resolve this: Get Support

Cheers.

I can confirm that this is also happening with Toshiba networked printers. Specifically, the Paper Feed selection is not saved either in a Print Job Preset nor in a Custom Preset.

While it seems clear to me that the problem is in macOS, if anyone should find a printer for which this works, it would be nice to hear about.

@msknvw Your last bullet is especially annoying, since the problem is clearly not to do with "the printers." Apple has online documentation (Save frequently used print settings for routine printing on Mac - Apple Support) about how this is supposed to work; they couldn't have documentation if it was a sub-system for which they are not responsible. I would interpret that as a CYA for a problem that Apple Support knows they can't fix, since the problem is within the OS.

Anyhow, I encourage everyone having this issue to file a bug report (Feedback - macOS - Apple). I believe that they do not monitor these Community pages.

Yes. 13.0.

That dialog will look different depending on your hardware and driver, but also the software you're printing from.

Regardless of how they're configured to look, try to force the Print using system dialog option in both software (Firefox and the one you'll eventually be printing from). The trigger for that will also most likely look different from mine.

The second key part is to save the preset in Firefox as a Print Job Preset.

I just installed Sonoma and hoped the printing problems resolved. Nope! I cannot believe this problem from Apple. Any recent driver for my Brother laser printer will not work. Presets will not save and printing files longer than 15 pages freeze and self delete. I have returned to Brother's CUPS drivers from 3 years ago and generally this solves the problems. There is no way Apple is not aware of this issue. I believe they check this forum, I have personally called them many times before Sonoma and they diligently state they are unaware, suggest reinstalling the OS, nothing works and I get escalated to high level support. They seem unaware of the problem and have absolutely no solutions. I understand other posters in this forum have discovered certain work arounds, like saving presets in only Apple apps... really? Come on Apple, this is totally unacceptable. Printers have not become dinosaurs yet in our "paperless" office!

Years ago MacOS would not remember "Canon" presets, or Canon would not remember, or whatever. The big Epsons would do it too. Then they all figured something out. Everything was working great with MacOS and the Canon PRO4000 through Big Sur, then they "improved" the printing in Ventura. The new interface sucks, buries everything, does not remember presets, but at least it does not change print colors. So you get to set paper, sizes, etc., for every different print you make.. Just when you thought you were out,,,,,,

OK, this reply does not help other than to let you know you are not alone....

what's going to be? I'm sending feedback every single day, and some of my employees also. this is crazy! no solution. I'm going nuts!!!! I would want everyone reading this should send feedback Feedback - macOS - Apple

bombard them with feedback maybe they will fix this. I think they are too busy with visionPro which I'm not even so excited about.

C'mon Apple lets get back to the olden days when an update fixed problems.

its not fixed it was now released. so I'll give u exactly what is working and what is not working:

  1. so in Adobe programs or other apps that are not apple it basically holds the tray selection but then when u select different setting for example hi res or other things it again goes back to autoselect the tray. CRAZY!!!!!!.

1.a. in adobe programs the preset doesn't work at all, even u set the preset in another app or program or even if u set it here, it does not have the preset settings u set them to CRAZY!!!!!!!

2.Apple apps: I tried this with notes. it doesn't hold only for once. after u do print and u come back lets say u wanna print again with a correction, its back to auto everything also the hi res is back to low res. and everything else. CRAZY!!!!!

2.a. but here u have if u use preset yes preset works. but why should I need to make a preset for every option I wanna to, lets say now all defaults I want to use besides the tray lets say, its all CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY BEYOND BELEIF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's always been hit-and-miss with printer presets in macOS for as long as I can remember, but in Sonoma (probably starting with Ventura) and my new Epson printer, it's a complete miss. Like many others in this thread, I cannot get settings to stick in a preset, most notably the paper tray and quality settings. It's easy to blame Apple, but it's probably something that gets stored in tandem with the printer manufacturer's software, and they may have not followed new rules Apple set. Just guessing of course. Really hoping this gets fixed...
