Default browser not working in Ventura 13.1

System Settings > Desktop & Dock shows my Default Browser as Google Chrome. When I click on a link, a pop-up shows me that Safari is my Default Web Browser and it opens the link in Safari. How do I make Chrome my default browser?

I have the same problem. I support my family with a total of 6 different Mac computers and it's the exact same situation, it's a bug introduced with Ventura 3.1.

I called Applecare tech support and after 1.5 hours on the phone and doing typical level 1 followed by level 2 support diagnostics over a 2 hour period, I was told that this situation is a known problem at Apple and that it will be fixed eventually.

The default browser works for links within Emails, however it doesn't work from desktop URL shortcut (.webloc) files.

The only workarounds are to drag/drop the .webloc shortcuts into the desired browser and/or setup shortcuts within the browser shortcut bar.

Me too! Very annoying. I installed Ventura 13.1 yesterday... wish I hadn't now. I am not very computer savvy so I find this very confusing. Opera is my default browser but when I click on a link it opens up in Safari . Have checked System Settings and Desktop & Dock shows my default browser as Opera, as it should be. When I click on a link it opens up in Safari and when I right click on the link it indicates that Safari is the default browser. Apple is there a fix for this please ?

Are you sure this is a bug??? When you try to change the default browser for a URL on your desktop from Safari to Chrome for example, it tells you that it's restricted and you don't have permissions. Apple locked down Safari by design. Now, they allow users to manually chose a different browser every time they open a page, but that is extremely cumbersome. Very atypical for Apple to be this rough on users ... "loving your customers" must have left the building.

It's a bit fishy to me. Looks like Apple is forcing users who have saved URL files on their desktops to open in Safari, even though, like in my case, the default browser is Chrome. It's almost as if Apple think that 'if we leave this little "bug" in the code, users who switched to Chrome at some point might be persuaded to use Safari again'. A sort of 'oh, Safari seems faster than Chrome again – mmm, think I'll set my default back to Safari again'. Job done!
