I have come to the conclusion the CD player doesn't work because the connections cant be made direct to the computer, but through a hub. Am I correct? Do I really have to pay £79 for a new one when I have a perfectly good old one?

Just to clarify, a SuperDrive will work plugged directly into one of the ports using a USB to USB C adapter as shown above. It will not work with a hub.

Use this type of inexpensive Adaptor for most USB-A Male to USB-C Female devices like Older USB Sticks, Older USB-A DVD Burner etc
