Can't play DVDs/CDs on 2020 Macbook Air

I am trying to use the Apple external CD and DVD player on my 2020 Macbook Air. It is not appearing as being connected. It works fine on my older Macbook Air.

When I looked for the CD and DVDs icon in systems preferences I got this message

You can’t open the “CDs & DVDs” settings pane because it is not available to you at this time.

What is going on? I've searched but it seems like none else has had this problem.

how is the superdrive connected to the Mac? if it is through a dock or hub, it will not work. it needs to be connected directly to the Mac to function. and with Macs that only have TB3 ports, you need an USB-C to USB Adapter to connect it directly.
