Mac Contacts keeps crashing when typing the first letter of a search

I upgraded this morning to Ventura 13.1 on my M1 iMac. When I type the first letter of my search into Contacts, the app immediately closes. If I scroll through my contact list, I can bring up the file in question.

I'm having the same issue. Contacts quits as soon as something is typed into the search bar. Safe mode doesn't help. Running Ventura 13.1 on a 16" MacBook Pro with M1 Pro CPU and 32 GB RAM. Updated to Ventura many weeks ago and to 13.1 as soon as it was released. No other apps have crashed.

Hi k-b-r-p-h,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand Contacts is crashing when attempting to search. We recommend testing to see if the same issue occurs in safe mode as this can help isolate the issue. Safe mode also removes some cache files as well. This article has the steps if needed: Start up your Mac in safe mode.

"

Start up your Mac with Apple silicon in safe mode

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Shut Down.
  2. Wait for your Mac to shut down completely. A Mac is completely shut down when the screen is black and any lights (including in the Touch Bar) are off.
  3. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until “Loading startup options” appears.
  4. Select a volume.
  5. Press and hold the Shift key, then click Continue in Safe Mode.
  6. The computer restarts automatically. When the login window appears, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

"

If the issue doesn't occur in safe mode, try booting up normally again to see if the issue still happens.

Since this issue occurred right after an update, you may also want to check your disk for errors by running First Aid. This will try to repair any errors to your disk and data structure. This article has the steps: Repair a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac.

Take care.

Two things jump to me.

1 - Is the Contacts Application Syncing with More than 1 Source. By that, it is meant syncing with Apple iCloud and Another Source ?

2 - The current version of Ventura, released Jan 23, 2023 is Now 13.2

There have been some Features Additions, Bug Fixes and Security Updates in 13.2 that may or may not be related to this issue
