where is my "preferences" tab? It only says system settings.

Nearly every Mac Application has its own preferences, available on its <application-name> menu.


If you find yourself suddenly running MacOS 13 Ventura, System Settings is the new replacement for System Preferences. Similar capabilities are said to be available there, although the display of those settings may have been moved around a bit.
