monitor webcam does not work with macpro laptop

I have two Macbook Pros, one is an older pro running High Sierra, the other a new 2022 pro running Monterey. I have a Dell external monitor that I have had for several years and the webcam would work for Zoom or Photo an apple connect from the older one running to the pin port on the monitor and an HDMI cable running from the new one to the same monitor. Now I cannot get the webcam on the external monitor to work with Zoom or Photo Booth. It previously worked for these programs with the older model but since I got the new one, now it doesn't work with either - the option to select the external monitor is not there on either device. Is the problem just a failing monitor. The monitor itself is working fine, the problem is just with the webcam....

Hello jayw53,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Just to clarify, are you connecting both MacBook Pro devices to the same monitor at the same time? Did this set up every worked in the past? IF so, do you recall anything changing around the time this issue started? Also, Does the camera on your external monitor work as expected if it is connected to one MacBook Pro(old or new one) at a time?

To get started, please check out this helpful link:

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.

Thanks for those details, jayw53. Let's continue to narrow down what might be going on.

Does the external monitor webcam show available when you aren't in clamshell mode on your newer MacBook Pro?

We'd also like you to test the single connection setup in another user profile. These steps will help us narrow down if it's something when using clamshell mode only, the external monitor overall, or your user profile with your Mac. Use the steps from the link below to create a test user profile on your MacBook Pro (2022) with admin privileges. Log in to it, then see how the external monitor webcam does in Photo Booth. Test both in clamshell mode and while open.

We look forward to hearing back from you.

Take care.

It worked fine in the past with the older macpro connected to the monitor via DVI-D cable with an apple adapter. The problem surfaced after I connected the new macpro to the monitor (via HDMI cable)-both were connected at the same time. I have tried disconnecting the new computer HDMI cable, in essence having just the older macpro with the DVI-D cable connected as well as disconnecting the DVI-D cable to older computer and reconnecting the HDMI to the new computer - still nothing. All this is using clamshell mode to use only the external monitor - all I get now is "camera is off" and there is no option under camera for external display using either connection.
