Apple Watch Ultra Heart Rate During Workout

I’ve been having problems with my Apple Watch ultra. basically as seen in the photos I’ve attached, every workout I do starts with the Apple Watch reading my heart rate and then for the next 5-10 minutes it doesn’t read at all. I’ve looked everywhere and read different forums and tried every setting possibility out there but none of it seems to work because it looks like I’m the only one with this problem, I’ve tried loosing and tightening my strap but it doesn’t effect the process. I’ve came to conclusion that this is a bug in the workout app because the heart rate sensors work and as seen they read my heart rate through the other half of my workout.

if anyone else has this problem please let me know.

Same issues here. I got an Ultra back in mid March. I spent two weeks running totally frustrated with the HR missing more than half of my run. As soon heart beats go above 135 BPM (it seems to be my magic number) the watch gets lost and just recovers readings almost always 10+ minutes later (but still on and off). After looking around and trying tighter, looser, upper arm, inside of wrist, bla bla bla…same problems. For sanity check, I went for a run with the Ultra on my left arm and my wife’s 8 Series on my right arm. For my surprise the Ultra lost more than half as usual, 8 Series didn’t miss a beat.

I went back to Apple Store and replaced my Ultra thinking I had a defective unit. However, new unit and same old problems.

Anyway, I’m more inclined to believe it’s poor hardware/software interface. It’d be weird Apple having a different software running on 8 Series and Ultra. They might share the same software, but the weight/size/shape of the Ultra may requires a different solution (maybe even hardware…not sure if it’s the same as 8 Series).

Below Heart Readings from my last 20 minutes run and a fast pace walk at the end. Difference is abismal. Running it got just a bit more than 4 minutes readings.

I loved the Ultra: concept, design, features; and I was so looking forward to go diving with it. But there’s no point of having an outdoor smartwatch that can’t monitor heart beats.

Now it’s time to return the Ultra again and decide if I move to a 8 Series or other brands, because it’s pretty clear Apple is not concerned at all on fixing this problem. Apple isn’t the same anymore and I’m on the ecosystem since 2009!

I have the same and frustrating problem. It only shows HR reading for a couple of minutes. Then it goes blank…if I stop it shows my HR. That it disappears again after a couple of minutes.

I will try to return (hopefully a refund a go back to my reliable series 7!) it I’ve tried everything from re starting it to re installing!!! NOT GOOD APPLE!

I had this problem and eventually what solved it for me was to wear my watch on the inside of my arm, so the the screen is facing inwards instead of outwards.

Once I did this, the heart rate monitoring was constant and never broken. I think it’s because the skin on the inside of my arm is smoother, with less hair and less sun damage (thickening.)

Give it a try. I actually like wearing my watch on the inside now.

Hope this helps some of you.

I don’t think there is a real explanation out there and it dosent matter if try to put in place some sort of “ritual” or “magic approach” (position, weather, other small factors), unfortunately yeah like myself I been experiencing this issue but as I posted above, the running session after latest OS update went fine and smooth.

I believe there are some deeper issue with the software that somehow are not fixed yet if, and it shows up sometime.

I went also for a swim and the recording looks fine.

I have an Apple Watch 7, fully up to date on the operating system, and it can’t calculate my heart rate for the first 5-9 min of EVERY run. It consistently tracks my heart rate on all other activities- outdoor and indoor cycling, hiking, walking, and weight training. It is very frustrating, especially since my runs aren’t very long! It has got to be a software issue. Since it works fine for all the other activities, I think it has to do with the Run activity. I’ve tried manually making my watch give me my current heart rate right before I start the run, but it still has the gap. And when I try to manually get my heart rate during the run (which will probably cause me to test the Fall alert system), it still can’t calculate it.

By the way to save time, and without insulting your intelligence, Support will probably start with...

First force restart it

i.e. press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds, then release both buttons when you see the Apple logo.

If that is no help

Unpair and erase your Apple Watch

On Youtube, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXBcNcbTcqg&list=RDCMUCYFQ33UIPERYx8-ZHucZbDA&start_radio=1&rv=UXBcNcbTcqg&t=25

and then

Set up your Apple Watch

Or in Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rb3vX86RUQ&list=RDCMUCYFQ33UIPERYx8-ZHucZbDA&index=3

If no better you may want to unpair then set up without restoring the backup.

You may also want to make sure the software on the watch is up to date.

Yeah it sucks being on the not working side but Apple support are very friendly and helped me a ton so I’m going to talk to them in about an hour about the problem because what the person who helped me out said to do didn’t work and looks like it’s even getting worse because it recorded only 40 percent of my workout where before it would recorded about 60-70 percent. I used to have a series 2 and was probably one of the firsts to have an Apple Watch in my country but because of military duty I had to switch to a normal watch and now that I’m done with that phase I want to reward myself but it’s a bit annoying to be honest.

The watch is still a bit temperamental even after the recent software upgrades, although maybe it has improved slightly. Here are 2 contrasting heart rate profiles, both where I just went out running without any special precaution about how I wore the watch. Of course the weather was similar, cool and I tend to wear the same clothes and repeat similar tracks although these are of different lengths. The first image shows that the watch never managed to sync to my real heart rate until maybe after 9km. The second it was as usual not synced at the beginning but soon settled down. Conclusion... I wear a tennis sweat band to keep the watch further up the wrist to keep a more reliable track of my heart rate.

I am also getting the same problem and super disappointed with it. I have been an owner of Garmin sport watched for >10yrs and this was never an issue. My last Garmin was an Epix 2, which I still used this year before deciding to go for Apple, and I'm already missing its reliability when it comes to sports.

On the Ultra, I've already played with many settings (like the precision start on/off), as well as having the band more/less tight to the wrist and so far no luck. I really feel this is a SW issue, but if that's the case, it would also appear in all other Apple watch models, right? Anyone knows if this is an Ultra's specific issue or if it affects all Apple Watch models that share the same WatchOS version?

Here's an example of what happens to me.

It's always in the first 5-10min of the race.
