iCloud files filling my disk

I was under the impression that iCloud Drive files were brought to the Mac 'when needed'.

I want my files on iCloud Drive.

I want them on my Mac 'when I need them'.

I don't want them filling my drive so that I cannot work without continuous 'Disk Full' dialog boxes in my apps.

Kindly advise. Thanks.

Hey there Tom,

We'd like to confirm more details to better understand what's happening, along with ruling out some general possible causes:

  1. As we see that iCloud Drive is taking up what looks like a third of the built-in storage, we wanted to ask if 'Optimize Mac Storage' is enabled? You can check for this by clicking on the Apple logo, then on System Settings > Your Name > iCloud > Optimize Mac Storage(near the top). An explanation of what it does when it's enabled is located right next to this option.
  2. When did iCloud Drive start to show taking up this amount of built-in storage?
  3. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section 'Restart' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac
  4. If you have a compatible Mac model, the latest version is macOS 13.1. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.

Cheers!
