New red mic icon on my MBA screen -- has X next to icon but clicking x does not close... ???

Happy Holidays to all.

Am hoping for help with a recent irritating thing on my MBA 2020 M1; with Ventura 3.1.

I do use voice dictation a good deal, but recently on right side of screen, a microphone icon started to automatically appear with an X to its right, in a small red box. Single and double clicks on the icon or the X did not change anything, nor did it turn mic on.

When I use my keyboard shortcut to turn the mic on, the normal box, pointing to the insertion point turns on, with the word done underneath as normal.

While I use the microphone, the red mic box slides to R, off the screen. Then, if I turn the mic off, either by clicking done, or by double clicking, the key that I use, the red box with the mic and the X comes right back.

I looked in the settings menu and didn't find anything related to this, and when I searched here the only response I got was to a different kind of mic icon that used to appear several revisions ago – that is the last response was in the 2020.

Thank you in advance for any leads or information to help me swat this Red mic box away from my screen.

Hi NJpsychout,

Thanks for connecting with us here in Apple Support Communities. Do you notice this happening with all apps that use Dictation or does it appear at all times? Let's see if the issue also happens in safe mode. See: How to use safe mode on your Mac

How to use safe mode
Determine whether you're using a Mac with Apple silicon, then follow the appropriate steps:

Apple silicon
1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

Intel processor
1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window.

Starting in safe mode will take a little longer than normal, because it verifies and repairs the directory, cleans caches, and loads only Apple-critical items. It may also help to resolve the issue you're facing.

Kind regards.
