Set Default reply to address in Mail

Hi,

I'd like further explanation of the answer to this question, first asked in 2015:

Original Question:

I know one can set the default address for composing NEW email messages in Mail, however I'm looking for a way to set a default address to always be used when REPLYING to emails in Mail.

e.g. I have two email addresses, *******@g****.com and ******@j****.com. I always want to reply using the ******@g*****.com address, no matter which email address the original message was sent to.

Answer by Eric Root:

Try Mail/Preferences/Accounts /Account Information. Select an account, then go to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). From the drop down menu select Edit SMPT server list. Associate both e-mails with one server. Then set that server as the outgoing server in the Accounts section for both accounts.

Question still needing a reply:

Can you please give me more specific instructions when you say "Associate both e-mails with one server"?

Do you mean that I choose the same SMTP server for both email accounts? If so, the problem I have is that only the first account can authenticate with the SMTP server. The second account can't do so as it's a different email address.

Thanks!

Re: when I went to reply to a Yahoo email sent to me, the outgoing server was still the Yahoo one.

We do have a drop-down list of the addresses we can send from so we can choose.

(Hover over the "From" address bar, and click the tiny blue up / down arrows)

That seems cumbersome when you want to always send from the same address though.

See if Apple support's article (link below) can help:

Haven't used rules myself, yet seems you may be able to set up a "rule" for eMail replies.

Hi annpiece

Welcome back to the Apple (user-to-user) Community!

Wondering if this illustration may help:

This first Mail account selected above and it's Outgoing Server setting:

The different mail account selected below with it's different Server setting:

(After clicking the tiny "blue" (up /down) arrows at the end of the above setting)

Below: Showing the choice of server settings for the second Mail account:

So, with the choices available, both accounts could be set to the same outgoing Mail Server, if need be.

Note: There is also a choice (at the bottom of the server list) to edit the SMTP Sever List if needed.

Hope this is helpful :-)

PS: Another possibility:

Seems Mail's (drop-down list of possible) reply address options

is populated from our own address "card" in "Contacts" app.

You may want to try ensuring only the address you want to reply from is listed in Contacts.

(You can use the "Edit" button to make changes and test this if you want.)
