An error occurred erasing the disk.

I get "An error occurred erasing the disk" every time and with different usb sticks when I try to create a USB installer stick

Make sure to erase the whole physical USB stick. Within Disk Utility you may need to click "View" and select "Show All Devices" so that the physical drives appear on the left pane of Disk Utility. Erase the whole physical USB stick as GUID partition and MacOS Extended (Journaled).


As @BDAqua mentions, some USB sticks may not work. The quality of many USB sticks is extremely poor, plus Macs can be very picky about the drives used for booting or even working with macOS.
