Apple Watch Shortcuts don’t open URL anymore

Since a few days (maybe after a software update), my Apple Watch doesn’t run Shortcuts anymore that used to open a URL in the built-in browser.

It’s even a shortcut provided by Apple via the Gallery: “Browse Top News”.

It shows the error: “shortcuts could not open the app for the url scheme” on the Apple Watch.

Does anyone know a solution?

Hello.

I found the solution myself: the „Open URLs“ shortcut simply does not work on the Apple Watch anymore since the software update, it shows the error from my screenshot above.

Solution: switching the shortcut to „Show Web View“ leads to the expected result now.

I recommend noting this in the shortcut app and changing the shortcuts in the „gallery“ overview.

FaB1877,

Have you changed your default browser to a browser other than Safari on your companion iPhone? If so, can we test changing it back to Safari and running the shortcut again? Change the default web browser or email app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

How to change your default web browser or email app
1. Go to Settings and scroll down until you find the browser app or the email app.
2. Tap the app, then tap Default Browser App or Default Mail App.
3. Select a web browser or email app to set it as the default. A checkmark appears to confirm it's the default.

Did you have an opportunity to remove and re-add the shortcut?

Also, if you haven't already, let's restart both your iPhone and Apple Watch to refresh that connectivity.

Restart your iPhone

Thanks.

Hey there FaB1877,

We understand your Shortcut is not working as expected on your Apple Watch. It sounds like it may be specific to one Shortcut, and maybe that specific link. Did you try removing the Shortcut, double checking the link you're using from a browser, and then setting up the Shortcut again? It is possible that a third party changed or updated the URL, causing the error.

Take care.

Thanks a lot for your response.

I am using the official Shortcut provided via the “Gallery” called “Browse top news”… the issue still exists and it doesn’t matter which URL I change it to, my Apple Watch doesn’t open it - but on my iPhone the links open correctly.

I assume it has something to do with the last software update I did on my watch to 9.2.
