iPhone speaker will shut off while taking on calls

When I use speaker phone on a call while waiting or in a conversation the speaker phone will just shut off. I have to tap speaker again then it comes on then shuts off again. This just started after update 16.2 .

Troubleshooting an iPhone After Updates:

A. Update to iOS16.3

iOS16.3 was just released. So, install the update, seeing if anything is fixed.

Update Using a Computer:

You can use a Computer to update. Read My User Tip: Making Use of a Computer for Updating an iOS Device - User Tip. If any updates are available, they will install, sure enough.

B. Report this to Apple:

Do your part: Let Apple know what is going on here. Provide them with feedback on this. They may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they received on this, the more they will know what is going on, and what needs to be fixed in updates to come.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Comment: that this all started after installing an update. Include the URL of this thread.
  3. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  4. Proceed from there aw necessary

C. Signal Strength:

Has this always occurred? If so, it may be because you don't have a strong signal wherever you are (typical in rural areas).

D. Whom to Contact:

Your Carrier:

Contact your Carrier, if something does not seem right, as they are the one who manages the service of Cellular.

E. Check the Battery Health:

Apple recommends you get a new battery, once the Battery Health reaches 80% or lower. When the Battery Health is 80% or lower, it is time for a new battery.

  1. Go To: Settings
  2. Tap: Battery
  3. Tap: Battery Health
  4. View: [the percentage]
  5. Is it 80% or less?  If so, it is time for a new battery.

My parents are BOTH having this problem since updating to 16.2 and none of the troubleshooting steps shared here help. They've also tried turning off bluetooth to be sure nothing else is trying to interfere with the audio. I'm going to restate the problem as I understand it:

  • When they receive a call, they turn on speaker phone (using "audio->speaker" on the call menu) to have the conversation on speaker phone. This highlights the audio button to a white color.
  • Speaker phone works for some time until it suddenly stops working in the middle of the call.
  • When this happens, the audio button on the iPhone wi a disabled state (no longer white, as if they had tapped it and chosen "iPhone")
  • They will tap the audio button again and choose speaker but the process repeats itself.
