iMovie, iTunes, Youtube Copyright

Can I use a song I purchased in Apple iTunes in an iMovie project and upload it to Youtube to share with family and friends? I purchased several songs in iTunes and created a video to share and uploaded it to Youtube. This is the message:

This video contains copyrighted material. As a result, it has been blocked in some countries and/or regions

I Ain’t Worried - Acoustic

I am in the US. Guessing this means it can be used in the US.

I always play by rules so don't understand.

The video is also unlisted since I only want to share it with family and friends.

Thank you.

I have only used You Tube to share family videos. I find it very satisfactory.

Although I haven't used DVD discs lately, in the past I would burn a disc and

then mail it to my intended recipient. Now days people simply mail thumb

drives, as you have mentioned. They can be included with a Holiday Card.

There are other video websites, like FaceBook, Vimeo, Instagram. You would

want one where you can password protect the video. In the iMovie

Help menu type in "Share online" for directions.

You can also share videos through iCloud. You must first join a family.

In the iMovie Help menu, type in iCloud Sharing/Set Up Family Sharing.

Also type in iCloud File Sharing to Share Documents.

In the Photos app there is a feature to set up shared albums. You can

check out the Photos app help menu for more info.

The song that you purchased in iTunes may not contain DRM protection, but likely it still is copyrighted being from a Hollywood movie. However, according to the message it is only blocked in Belarus and Russia. By its terms it doesn't appear to bar you from sharing with your family and friends in the USA. It is quite common to have these sorts of regional restrictions. You can decide to accept them or remove the song from your movie. Having said that, the use that you can make of an iMovie project is determined by the iMovie license agreement found from the iMovie menu when you click on iMovie/About iMovie/License Agreement. So I refer you to that.

As a precaution, I must add the usual caveat: The opinion expressed above is not legal advice. Copyright and digital rights laws are complex, and therefore you are advised to consult a qualified attorney to determine your rights.

Rich839, thank you!

Is there other methods to share videos securely with family and friends?

I started with google drive because you can lock down pretty good. However without notice got daily view limit reached. They block video after so many views per day. I contacted google support and they could not share what the daily view limit is. I think it’s 25 views.

I didn’t want to use YouTube because I don’t care for the ads and making money on the video. It’s simply to share with family and friends.

Very new to this. Normally would just send out dvd or thumb drive with the iMovie to family to watch.

I always play by the rules.

thank you for your time.
