Touch Bar not Showing Emojis

I saw a thread from 2021 and early 2022 discussing this, but with no resolution.

After using my 2019 MBP 13" for a while, the touch bar emojis stop appearing. Sometimes it's just in one app (messages or mail or safari), but at other times it is all across the apps. All I have is a black touch bar with an X that doesn't do anything.

This was true in Monterey and is now occurring in Ventura. Suggstions?

Hello S_Fix,

You mention this starting on a previous macOS version. Do you remember ever installing a product called Webroot SecureAnywhere? We found the following about not being able to access the emoji on the Touch Bar if this is installed: If you can’t dictate text, type accented characters, or select emoji in the Touch Bar of your Mac - Apple Support

Keep us posted.

Hi S_Fix,

You mentioned that it will often work in one app but not another, does it not work in a specific app or does that vary?

Does this happen if you test in another user on your Mac? Testing in another user account can help isolate the issue and determine if it is system wide or only with the specific user account.

If you don't already have one, you can create a test user

  1. Go to the Apple menu (  )
  2. Tap on System settings > User & groups
  3. New Account

You can create another admin account and test to see if this occurs within that account as well.

If it does, you may want to reach out to Apple directly for assistance. Depending on your region, you may be able to reach them here: Get Support.

Hello S_Fix,

Thank you for those details and confirming the app hasn't been installed. You mentioned you're running macOS Ventura. Have you updated to the latest macOS version of Ventura? If not, let's make sure you're running the latest macOS using the steps listed below. You can also find these steps outlined in the following article.

  1. "From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen:
    • Choose System Settings. Then click General in the sidebar, and Software Update on the right.
    • Or choose System Preferences. Then click Software Update.

2.If Software Update finds new software, click the Update Now or Upgrade Now button to install it.

3.Enter your administrator password, if asked. During installation, your Mac might restart, and you might see a progress bar or blank screen several times."
