When I receive text messages, they get forwarded to my iMac. Is there a way to extend the time in which the notification displays on the monitor? Right now, they show for about 3 seconds and then move off screen.

Go to System Preferences, and select Notifications and Focus. There is a Messages selection there where you can specify certain parameters for those Messages Notifications.
See below, I have selected "Banners" and as indicated there, those Notifications go away automatically.
If instead you select "Alerts" that option indicates that the Alert will stay on the screen "until dismissed" which sounds like what you want?

This may not be what the user wants.
Regardless of how long the Notification is Visible - the text message will appear as unread in the Messages Application if the Message application is in the Dock
