The volume and Brightness keys on my new Apple Bluetooth Magic keyboard do not work. If I select System Preferences, Keyboard, there is no checkbox to untick for "Use All F1, F2 keys etc as standard function keys'

I am a Brit in Trinidad and purchased from the UK an Apple Magic Keyboard (MODEL 2450) to attach to my US purchased 2013 iMac 27" running Catalina. Keyboard set up as European (The light grey model numbers are too small and much to light to read to complete a setup screen request, even under a magnifying glass - Apple Please note the foolishness of this).

The new Magic Mouse + Keyboard have been connected initially via my older model iPhone Lightning to USB Cable, not the supplied USB-C to Lightning Cable. This was the general advice provided by all channels of enquiry.

The issue is the Volume and Brightness keys on the Bluetooth Magic keyboard do not work. If I select System Preferences, Keyboard, there is no checkbox to untick for 'Use All F1, F2 keys etc as standard function keys'

I do find this absurd after spending 5-hours of research to resolve installing a new keyboard, I was obliged to purchase due to my second Apple keyboard losing its LH CONTROL KEY function (...it was not dirty but dead).

Can anyone put me out of my misery please...

Andrew

PS. I am the fellow who put in the worlds first online bank and secure airline ticketing (cash redeemable) in 1984 and I can't install a replacement keyboard...or is it Apple that is the problem?!

Hey there Andrew,

It sounds like you've taken excellent steps to try resolving this so far! Thanks for those details.

Since this is a new keyboard, are you able to test to see if this issue persists when connected to another Mac? If it persists, then that would signal an issue with the keyboard itself and not the Mac or settings. In that case, you'll want to reach out to the place of purchase for possible return or exchange options.

You can also try any of the applicable steps below to help further:

• Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Accessibility, click Keyboard, then click Hardware. Make sure Slow Keys is turned off. If Slow Keys is on, you must press and hold a key longer than usual before it’s recognized.
• Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Accessibility, click Pointer Control, then click Alternate Control Methods. Make sure Mouse Keys is off. If Mouse Keys is on, pressing keys on the numeric keypad moves the pointer instead of entering numbers.
• Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Input Sources. Select “Show Input menu in menu bar.” Open the Input menu, then make sure the correct keyboard layout is selected.

To see the keyboard layout, click Keyboard, then choose “Show keyboard and emoji viewers in menu bar.”

If your Mac doesn’t respond to key presses

Take care!
