Sometimes its a strange fault in the screen (lcd) . Only notisable thing is that the screen is a bit yellow. The screendriver on the motherboard struggle to maintain a bright screen , and then after 2 min it turns off and re-boot. This is usually these cheap copies from china . buy the expencive ones. This happend to me , and the screen was brand new.

Here are my two cents. which I doubt will help because I guess there's nothing we can do about this problem. thanks apple. Ive been living with this problem for a while now at least 3 or 4 months. it wasn't so bad at first but now it shuts off about 4 times a day. it started for me back when the iphone 4 came out with an issue with the 3g to where if i had it on i couldn't make phone calls and text messages just wouldn't send. data worked fine but who cares really? so i went to apple and the ever so helpful gentleman told me there was nothing they could do about it, great thanks a lot guy. this started after one of the updates i don't remember which. so fine i lived without my 3g for a while.

soon my phone started to just turn off with about 64% battery live and progressively got worse to where sometimes it will turn off at 99 or 100%. i figured out that with my 3g on the phone wouldn't turn off nearly as much which was great until i had to make a call. so i have been keeping the 3g on now because i figure some calls are better than none. it is clear tho that the the 3g helps because ill turn it off sometimes to send a text and literally when the signal switches over to the E bam it turns off.i have AT&T btw. which honestly i don't mind i (used to) get signal everywhere i go.

to be honest here i really think that this is apples doing. i guess it could be a coincidence that it started happening when the new phone came out but there's no way apple cant make a fix for this problem (either one). i truly think apple doesn't want to fix it so you have to buy the new iphones. it only makes sense.

so i don't know what to do besides get a new phone or live with it. and im not going to get a 4s if the 5 comes out this year....maybe ill just go back to my original razr which works like new...

if apple or a&t wont help you resolve your issue ask them for there ombudsmen, they have to tell you who they are and give you contact details for them. if they start bein funny and give you wrong details or wont tell record all the calls as proof. probably why the iphone doesnt have a record call feature.

explain to them the situation and they will give you the best advice on where to go next, the ambudsmen is like the dad for all companies, you have a problem with any company they will sort it out.

I've got the same problem and this happened a week after I got the phone from my 3 store. I took it back and they told me how to reset it but this only turns it back on. This is annoying as when I want to call someone and then have to wait 30 seconds for it to turn on. What if someone was attacking me and I needed to call the police and my phone was off or if someone urgently needs to contact me. Im going back to the store and if they don't give me a new phone I don't know what to do. Do you think I should be returning this.

My wife and I both started having this problem on our 3GS phones after the latest update to iOS 5.1.1. Battery indicator shows 50% but then I go to do something and it just shuts off. Normally it doesn't do it until 30% but still, it shouldn't be doing this because of a software update! Hope they come out with another soon that fixes this problem.

I had similar problems with my 3GS. Can't say for sure that it started with the upgrade to 5.1.1 but the problem did seem to start at about the same time. Took it in to the Apple store and they reloaded all the OS software from scratch. I had a lot info backed up on iClouid but there was still a lot of work to set my icons, download the apps, re-setup my links to yahoo mail etc. Still had the same problem within an hour or two of leaving the Apple Store.

After reading a bunch of the blogs, I decied to turn off the option which displays the % battery life in numerals to the left of the battery icon. No shutdowns for 2-3 days now. Plus the battery charges up and wears down in a manner consistent with my previous almost 4-years experience with it.

Don't know if this will help anyone else, but it's a trivial thing to try.

Good Luck!

i've been experiencing similar problems lately. I have the 3GS with 5.0.1 and the phone turns off suddenly and i have to press the button to turn it on. it tried all the above methods but none off them seems to be working..except that i pulled out my sim card and left it for a while and it seems TO BE WORKING WELL! When i put it back on it turned off after a while. i pulled it out again and... all good. I dont know if it solves the problem but either way i dont know whats the use of a cellphone without a sim card inside!
