I had the same problem. It started a few weeks ago and I noticed a slight discoloration in the middle of the screen, which I didn't put any pass on . Charging my phone today and the battery swelled to twice the size, luckily I was able to take it apart before the motherboard got to badly damaged (I hope). I was looking around the net and found this problem. It seems to be a fault with a particular battery.

I have two 3Gs at home. One running the 5.01 and the other running 6.0.1. The last one has just begun shutting off randomly. It uccors when the battery is low - around 50 % and below. I have been able to start the phone without plugging it in a charger, but right now the only way to get the phone started is to charge it, turn it on and wait until fully charged. I have only recently installed a new app, so that is not the problem. I believe there is a flaw in the new version of the OS regarding the battery. I will try to reinstall a later version of the OS. This post is made just for information.

3GS

This issue has been happening since I was running ios 4.2.1. January I upgraded to ios 6 and the upgrade has not resolved the issue. The problem has since progressively been getting worse. Right now my phone shuts off at approximately 85%. I have cords everywhere work/home/car & an old mophie so I can remain juiced for the most part. Lately my mophie has been draining fast so I only have a few hours between charges.

I EXTREMELY concerned that my phone may not work in an EMERGENCY when I am out & not attached to power.

Hi. I understand how frustrating it is. I had te same issue. I literally went all over the web.

I looked for a million solutions. Jailbreaks. Firmware update. Reinstalling.

Everything. Downgraded. Didn't work. Then I finally got th battery changed.

A fresh battery. And it works like a charm now. Just the battery for me.

As long as your software isn't damaged (highly unlikely), it's your battery.

3Gs has had this issue for a while now. Change the battery. You'll be golden.

I exatly did the same thing. Hours of searching the web for possible software bugs, restores of the old firmwares, leaving the phone to be fully discharged for 8 hours etc. etc. but the problem was still there. So I went to an Apple repair service and they swapped the battery with the new one. Problem solved for now. I highly reccomend you to replace your battery. Hopefully this will solve your problem.
