Interesting when you see very similar threads for the 3gs, 4 and 4s. Theres an awful lot of people with the same annoying problem. Personally I've done a restore, bought a new battery, replaced the power button and changed ios. None of these are solutions. My phone cuts out every 2nd phone call i make these days. Care to help out apple??

I had the same problem . I search all the internet about this and found alot of good info about this issue. 1st thing!

if you are replacing the battery pay attention to the "APN number of battery" if your original battery apn is 616-0433 and you replacing this with new and different battery apn , the iphone will do the same random shuts off! The solution is to open the iphone , check the apn number , order new battery with same apn number witch costs less than 20$ and replace it! You can see how to do this in you tube. Thos is the only 100% working solution . All others like ifixit is promo of companies to sell more batteries. Have a good day ! Greetings from Greece!

so i was facing the same issue... my iphone randomly shut down even though if the battery is @ 90% ... i was wondering whether this is a software issue or hardware related or battery issue 😐 so finally i decided to replace the battery and whoa! now the phone is just working fine.. no random shut downs.

replacement of battery just costed me Rs 1000 ($10 approx)

Recent reactivated 3GS to give to family member. Had same power loss issues. Batt replaced by apple auth repairer... No affect. Turned off I cloud backups and photo stream after I noticed it crashed after I took a photo and tried to what's app it. I recon I cloud and photo stream is the issue. Disable it and see if that solves it for you... Been half a day for me and seems better if not fixed (dare I say it)

well i dont know if this will work but it worked for me.. i dont think its the battery but the antenna, coz everytime the phone cant get signal it shut down. so heres what i did... i opened up my iphone 3gs and made sure that the connector of the antenna( or whatever it is called) is in place. you can search on youtube about 3gs signal or antenna problems and how to open your phone.and there it goes, works like magic.. no costs at all. its worth giving a try but be extra careful when doing this.
