Pencil no longer fits in lightning port

I bought an iPad and Pencil last year and they’ve worked together wonderfully for a year. I just tried to charge the Pencil but it literally will not fit in the lightning port. It fits in the iPhone port. Different charging cables will fit the iPad still but the Pencil will not squeeze in there. What can I do?
