I have an Ipod classic 5th gen 80 g. The drive appears to be blank. Is there any way I can get the operating system and/or software back on it so I will work again? The battery is new so that is no problem. I had purchased a supposedly NEW Toshiba hard drive but it was not new, (oh surprise!!!) it was used. Now it needs to be set up all over again.

You want the current version in the iTunes64Setup.exe or iTunesSetup.exe form rather than from the Microsoft Store.
Use one of these direct links as appropriate:

Uninstall the version from the Microsoft Store, head over to iTunes - Apple, scroll down to Looking for other versions > Windows. This will give you the current iTunes64Setup.exe installer which may work better for you than the one from the Microsoft Store.

Are you using iTunes, or a Mac running macOS 10.15 Catalina or later?
Are you able to read the hard drive stats as described in the tip?

Do you have the Microsoft Store version of iTunes, or one downloaded directly from apple.com? The old school version may work better with iPod classic in some cases.

Thank you. I got to an older version, followed your steps but when I tried to open it said it could not open library because it was from a newer version.

I tunes won't recognize the ipod at all. I am running Windows 10.
