Apple TV and HomePod

Since the week the original HomePod came out, I have had two of them, set up as a stereo pair, connected to my Apple TV. With the most recent updates, specifically, iOS 16, the HomePods often only play AppleTV system sounds, but when I open any app from Apple Music, to Netflix, to YouTube, the programming often will not play. When I enter or exit the app, I get the usual and correct sounds. Most of the time, the problem can be fixed by resetting the Apple TV, the HomePods themselves, or by changing the audio output in AppleTV system settings, but sometimes, even after full resets, I am left with the same issue. One of the greatest things about HomePod has been the phenomenal sound quality that the stereo pair provides, especially with anything on Apple TV, but now I find that it’s getting impossible to use. Has anybody had this problem?

I will add that my iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and HomePods are all updated to the most recent version of their operating systems.

Hey gatormjh,

We'd be happy to point you in the best direction for support. If the issues with audio playback from your iPhone onto your HomePod are persisting even after restarting and resetting the HomePod, you'd be best supported by reaching out to Apple Support directly since there wouldn't be any further steps we could suggest here on this forum.

They can be reached for support using this link: Get Support

For more info on using AirPlay to stream audio to your HomePod though, check out: Use AirPlay to stream video or mirror the screen of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

We hope this helps out.

Take care!

Hi gatormjh,

Thanks so much for following up with us.

Just to confirm, does adjusting the Apple TV audio settings help at all? You can find more information on how to adjust and calibration audio for Apple TV here, which may help: Adjust video and audio settings on Apple TV

Calibrate video or audio

You can fine-tune the video or audio calibration on your TV, home theater, or wireless speakers, using any of the calibration tools provided in Settings.

1. Open Settings  on Apple TV.
2. Go to Video and Audio.
3. Navigate to Calibration, then do any of the following:

• Color Balance: Select to measure and adjust the color of your picture using an iPhone with Face ID and iOS 14.5 or later.
• Wireless Audio Sync: Select to run a test with your iPhone to sync the sound of your wireless speakers to your wired speakers. See Calibrate audio between your wired and wireless speakers.
• Zoom and Overscan: Select to see a reference image you can adjust using your TV’s picture settings.
• Color Bars: Select to see a reference color bar image you can adjust using your TV’s picture settings.

If you continue to experience an issue, please contact Apple Support for further assistance. You might be able to to contact them here: Contact Apple Support

Thanks!

If you have your HomePods set up as the default audio, it should work but note * they must be assigned to the same room. If your Apple TV is in livingroom , so must the HomePods be. Also must be signed in with the same Apple ID and preferably on the s!e home wifi network.

See: Set up home theater audio with HomePod mini or HomePod and Apple TV 4K - Apple Support

Try rebooting the wifi also if you’re still experiencing trouble.

You can also try resetting HomeKit:

On the Apple TV in settings - Users Accounts- your name - iCloud- sign out.

Restart Apple TV

once it’s restarted, sign back in.

Set up AirPlay & HomeKit again on the ATV -(have your iPhone ready to sync)

Set the default audio to HomePods- making sure you assign them to the same room

Thank you for getting back to be. I might not have explained it well enough. The HomePod stereo pair works perfectly from my iPhone. The issue is with Apple TV. It will play the menu sounds as I move through the apps on the tv screen. Also plays the open and close app sounds. It’s the audio from actual YouTube or tv programming that is completely silent, or occasionally plays through only one speaker. When I close the app to start it again, I hear the system close app sound…
