Photos have a grey box and it won’t load because of an error.

How do I retrieve my photos? My friend and I took them and we showed the ones we liked to other at the time and continued taking more along the way. When I checked my phone later, 27 had a grey box and was blank, and there was no camera information too. When I took the photos, I was using my data. But the other photos appeared and came out fine even the ones after the blank photos, but these good ones won’t load. I’ve restarted my phone and updated my iOS, but it still won’t load. I tried to edit it, but it says, ‘cannot load photo’ ‘there was an error loading this photo’ and there’s no camera information, but I remember her showing me the photo at the time. What else can I do to retrieve these photos😭

Hi aprilxroses,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. You've done some great troubleshooting so far. Let's also have you check your storage as this can affect the photos that you currently see on your device. See: How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad

How iOS and iPadOS optimise storage

If your device is low on storage, it will automatically free up space while installing an app, updating iOS or iPadOS, downloading music, recording videos and more.

To make more storage available, your device can remove some of your items, such as streamed music and videos, files in iCloud Drive and parts of apps that aren't needed. It will also remove temporary files and clear the cache on your device. But your device will only remove items that can be downloaded again or that are no longer needed.
