Airplay and Ventura having wonky results

After upgrading to Ventura on my new M2 MacBook Air, I can no longer reliably stream music from the Music app to Sonos Airplay enabled Wifi speakers. After playing for several minutes the Music app stops or sometimes freezes. Once it stops it can be started again by playing through the MacBook speakers and adding the Sonos speakers, or by quiting the Music app and starting again. Very annoying to do this every 10-20 minutes.

This problem was also experienced on my AirPort Express devices. I felt the problem then was because those devices are no longer supported by Apple.

Solutions??

Hello David Estes,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help get AirPlay working normally on your Mac so the music doesn't stop.

Use these steps first for an AirPlay related issue:

"After each step, see if you still need help.

  1. Make sure that your AirPlay-compatible devices are turned on and near each other.
  2. Check that the devices are updated to the latest software and are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. Restart the devices that you want to use with AirPlay or screen mirroring.

If you're prompted to enter a password, you might have restrictions turned on, or you might need to adjust your AirPlay password settings.

Still need help?

If you have another issue using AirPlay, learn what to do.

If your music unexpectedly stops

If your music stops playing unexpectedly, use your device or Siri to start playing music again. In some situations, the Home app might be using your HomePod,* Apple TV, or AirPlay-compatible speaker as the main audio source for streaming music (even if your HomePod* or Apple TV isn’t currently playing music). Using Siri on that device or performing another task might cause playback to stop everywhere. You can also use an iOS device or computer with iTunes as an audio source to manually stream music instead."

We hope these steps can help isolate and resolve the issue so you can enjoy your music without disruption

Cheers!

Hi,

I've had the same issue. I did partially resolve it by updating my Sonos app on the Mac and reauthorizing it. But it still does not work on Ventura. I have to use my older machine on Monterey 12.6 to play Apple Music to other speakers.

While the Sonos speaker was the most reluctant to function, Ventura would not only refuse to connect to the Sonos, it would also drop the computers and the HomePod in no apparent order. I've shut down and restarted everything multiple times to no avail.

The Sonos would work when playing music from the iPhone.

Yes, I have a new 2023 MBP 14 running Ventura. Trying to AirPlay from Music using its built in AirPlay support does not work (only silence). It does work fine playing through the MBP speakers.

If I grab my 2012 MBP running Catalina and AirPlay from Music, **Using the same WiFi network and the same AirPlay devices** (Homepod Mini, and 2 Sonos One speakers) and sitting in the same chair - everything works fine.

Thus, this is some sort of Ventura issue, not a wifi issue, not a bluetooth issue, not a user doesn't know how to play through AirPlay issue.

(Edit: Also, If I select the Homepod mini, or one of the Sonos speakers using Control Center on the Ventura MBP, that works just fine. Only the Music app AirPlay malfunctions.)

Here is a work around that works on Ventura 13.3.1, and probably earlier versions. First connect to a device that only supports AirPlay 1, like the Yamaha WXA-50, then once that is playing connect to any AirPlay 2 devices. Everything will work, as long as the AirPlay 1 device is connected. If you disconnect the AirPlay 1 device everything will stop. Works for me, so far.

It's a kluge, but should help until Apple fix AirPlay 2 on Ventura
