Magic Mouse will not left click, all left clicks interpreted as right click.

This seems like a common problem but remains unaddressed.

I have an M1/2020 Macbook pro with a Magic Mouse 2 connected via bluetooth.

Periodically, sometimes it takes days or weeks, sometimes just hours, and today just minutes, but after some period the left click on the mouse stops working an all clicks are interpreted as right clicks.

Once this starts happening, I can power cycle the mouse and for a random period it will work properly, but then at some point will again only produce right clicks.

This is not a settings (as in System Preferences/Mouse) problem. Secondary click and other settings are proper and as I wish them. The actual function of the mouse changes after a period of time.

I am not sure if this is causation or correlation, but I usually notice the behavior change while using Chrome. The stuck on right click behavior however is not limited to Chrome.

Anyone have any ideas? A previous Macbook had a trackpad ribbon cable problem that caused weird behavior with an attached mouse, could this be the same problem (cracked trackpad ribbon cable?). If so, I'm not sure why a mouse power cycle would temporarily solve the problem (other than maybe it would reset the mouse driver).

would love any ideas.
