Apple watch and apple id
Why is it that when I try to connect my phone to an apple watch, it says my apple id cannot be used to unlock the apple watch?

They have to follow the directions in this link before you can use it. If they can't remove the watch from their account, it's useless to you. This is what they have to do --> What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Apple Watch, or buy one from someone else - Apple Support
