Having trouble connecting an ASUS external monitor to a new MacBook Air

Trying to connect a MacBook Air (M2 running macOS Ventura 13.1) to an ASUS PA278CV external monitor. Initially the monitor connected and the desktop showed on the monitor. While bringing up the Applications folder while upgrading some software the external monitor went blank and the monitor on the MacBook just shows the background graphic, but not the desktop. When the external monitor is disconnected the desktop reappears on the MacBook. Plugging the monitor in again, the MacBook shifts to the background graphics and the external monitor briefly flickers as if something tried to connect, but then it goes blank.

Let's use the steps below to boot your MacBook Air into safe mode to see if that behavior persists from there:


1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

It can take a few extra minutes to boot into safe mode. Your screen may flash or flicker while in safe mode. Those behaviors are expected. Testing in safe mode runs a check on your disk, removes some cached files, and can help isolate conflicts with startup items. Once you've tested that behavior in safe mode, you can restart to leave safe mode.


Should that behavior still persist, what specific software where you updating when this occurred?


Have you had the opportunity to test your external display with another cable or computer?
