.DNG file Preview
when I open a .DNG file in Preview it says 'Protected' but that is only when opening .DNG files. Is that 'normal' behaviour for Preview?

Looking at the Adobe website on their DNG files, it does show that you can use Preview or the Photos application to view those file types. Check under the section "How to open a DNG file" on their support site here: DNG files - Adobe Support
Have you checked to see if the files are protected in some way from where you obtained them (protected by the creator)? You may need to try with a new copy of the file to help rule out the file itself.
