Created recovery key doesn't work?

I am trying to turn on the recovery key option for my Apple ID. After the key is created, you must enter the key into a field before it's activated. However, when entered (checked, double-checked, even triple-checked), I got an error saying, "The recovery key you entered is not valid." Has any got this working?

I'm afraid to enable it now because if it can't authenticate a brand new key created moments before, what are the chances it will authenticate the key months down the road if I need it then?

I ran into the same issue, and I found a workaround. Use an iOS device to generate and verify a new recovery key instead of using macOS. I confirmed the bug six times on M1 MacBook Air, each time with newly generated keys, and the verification screen always gave the attached error.

Performing the same process on my iPhone was successful.

By any chance, are you using a non-"QWERTY" keyboard layout?

Welcome sluey,

There are a few reasons you may see the error message that you're receiving with the recovery key. To use a recovery key, you need the following:

    • A trusted phone number.
    • An Apple device to reset your password.
    • A device that's running iOS 11 or macOS High Sierra or later.
    • When entering the recovery key,  make sure to enter the complete recovery key including upper-case letters and hyphens.

You can view this information and more here: How to generate a recovery key. The "Use a recovery key" section will cover the requirements needed to use recovery key successfully.

We hope this information helps you out.

Kind regards!

These kinds of replies are generally unhelpful and feel like an automated response that doesn't understand the problem I presented. Since you're not an automation, it makes no sense. As a "Specialist," I would have expected more from you. Why provide a response that neither helps nor attempts to understand the problem? What do you get out of replying this way?

Totally share and understand your frustration. It’s sounding like we all just need to go direct to Apple Support each time we experience a bug in the system. But also thank you for taking the initiative of troubleshooting this yourself and posting here so another user like me could know that my experience was not an isolated incident.

Depending on time and energy, it may be valuable for any of us who are tech savvy, and also have the motivation to post here, but also take the issue to the appropriate and direct online Support channels. And perhaps post the solution, or what was discovered back here on the boards to assist other users.

It would be nice if Apple could do this. But that may be too much to ask as they are probably short staffed like everyone else and also probably have too many layers of bureaucracy to implement our vision of the “ideal” any time soon.

Lastly I do agree with Eric that there are security issues at play when addressing things like this on a public forum. But definitely would have been nice if they led with that to direct us to the appropriate channel immediately instead of seemingly not even reading your question then supplying essentially irrelevant information within context of the original question.

It’s not about the reply being generic. It was only tangentially related to my problem. I’m not asking how to use a recovery key. I’m still trying to set one up and the key generated by my mac only seconds before can’t be authenticated. If the reply acknowledged my issue and then said I don’t know why this is occurring but here is a generic page about recovery keys, that might make sense.

Every-time I have an issue and must post here, this kind of information is what posted 1st and it doesn’t feel authentic. It feels like post padding to increase the total # of posts on their account. I would rather receive no response.
