All files on desktop missing

Ventura 13.0.1 after a good night sleep. Waking up the iMac all the files from the desktop are not being displayed. This is the third time that happened.

Has anybody seen this? Is that a bug?

I can fix this by just copying a new file to the desktop, and then they all re-appear, but that can't be right?

iMac 27″, macOS 13.0

Well, I could not go to that computer in Finder and see what the use sees

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drivers from loading

3 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

4 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

Still issues >>

5 - If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

6 - If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

7 - Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer.

It makes a coherent and readable inventory of both the Hardware and Software used on the computer

The application is free or paid from added features.

After a good night sleep of the Computer as in Sleep Mode ?

Are the files from the Desktop associated with iCloud ?

link below

Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive

Depending on the number of files that need to sync can take some time to finish and depend on the Speed of connections and Apple Servers

The act of copying a new file to the desktop may have just forced a Sync to iCloud to cause the missing files to reappear ?

Well, that is going to take some time to go through all those steps, since this issue only happens after a long sleep (usually over night). In my case a regular restart already fixes the issue until the system stays in sleep mode over night again.

Follow on and missed in original reply 😔

Q - Ventura 13.0.1 after a good night sleep "

No, that would be too easy. In my iCloud Options, the desktop and documents folder is turned off. I don't want the files to sync with the cloud. Once this happens, i can wait as long as i want. Only copying a new file to the desktop will make the other files appear again.

If you go to the finder, and look into the desktop folder, they are all there. Just not displayed on the desktop.

Have seen Other Users posting the same link from time to time.

Users can find anything they want to find on the Internet including the perceived Requirement for Anti Virus Software on Apple Computers.

Just because the " Internet " tells them it is so , it Must the True.

There are no known Windows-like Viruses in the wild that self replicate and affect macOS, because of the underling UNIX  Foundation and Permission Limitation.

Additionally, specific to Big Sur macOS 11 and above. The Operating System resides in a Sealed and Read Only Volume that can not be opened by the User.

The Only thing this Antivirus software is protecting is the Bank Account of the Developers and for zero return to the User aside from the problems this software creates.

AntiVirus Developers purposefully Market their product to create a “ Fear Factor “. In so doing, creating a False Need for their Product.

The The Built in Security  is all that is required to protect the computer.

But, here we are going Sideways and Mudding Up the real issue , dealing with this computer issue

Follow On and specify excerpt for the provided link above

" EtreCheck does not meet Apple's standard for acceptance into the official App Store. "

" Certain Applications maybe available on the Apple Apps Store - this only means the Developer is prepared to pay Apple a portion on each sale "

I do know, from Reliable Sources, that Apple has been known to use the same alleged Unsafe Application Etrecheck Apple from the Developer, to diagnose and trouble shoot some Apple Computers and under certain situations.

You (volunteer) do not tolerate a second opinion? Your help is appreciated, even though it doesn't answer my initial question. That there was: Has anybody seen this before?

Q - " All files on desktop missing "

Have taken enough of the Users' time

Good luck with this computer issue

Should the User decide, at a later time, to run the Etrecheck Application, I hope Another Contributor will pick up this question and offer assistance.
