split transactions

I'm weaning myself off Quickbooks and using Numbers to track expenses. How do I split a transaction into two categories?

Record the two categories and the amounts to be assigned to each separately, or


Record the amount of each transaction in a single cell, then us a formula to assign the correct portion of that amount to each of the categories.


Depending on the consistency of the portions allotted to each category, the first or second choice may be more efficient.

Actual formulas would require a mor detailed account of how the amounts are to be distributed.

Are you sure you want to do that? Numbers is great for simple expense tracking (see the 'Personal Budget' template at File > New in your menu). Easy to use and intuitive. But once things get just a little complicated then apps like Quickbooks and Quicken are time-tested tools to get the job done.
