How to fix choppy audio on MacBook Pro with Bluetooth devices?

Using a bluetooth headset, mouse, and keyboard. Have restarted PC, audio-related apps, no avail. Audio is choppy and stuttering at seemingly regular intervals. Any ideas on how to fix this? I've read countless other forums and articles and nothing I do seems to work.

I read in another forum, that this happens if there are more than two devices connected via bluetooth. Sure enough I also have mouse, keyboard and speaker connected. Switching the mouse to usb "fixed" the problem. @Apple: Please look into this issue. Happened to me after upgrading to 13.1 on m1 max.

just to clarify: 3 bluetooth devices make the sound choppy, 2 bluetooth devices and it works.

Just updated from Monterey where I never had this issue, to Sonoma, and this is happening EVERY day, happens with Airpods Pro with No other bluetooth devices connected, happens with wired headphones no other bluetooth devices connected. I have powered off, restarted, checked for updates, and nothing is fixing this issue.

This is not the place for inaccurate generalities. I can stream 4K movies to my Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones with Apple Magic Mouse and Magic extended keyboard connected without a trace of audio interference. That means I can be concurrently using the mouse and keyboard while watching a YouTube movie without an issue. This is true on Monterey 12.7.4, Ventura 13.6.6, and Sonoma 14.4.1 here on a 2020 Core i7 iMac, 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Pro, and 2023 M2 Mac mini Pro — respectively.

However, it also depends on the presence or absence of other devices causing Bluetooth radio interference and what Bluetooth profiles are provided and the quality of their implementation in the connected devices.

Currently experiencing this problem, which happens to me once a year it seems, then I fix it and forget how to fix it when it occurs again.

My setup:

MacBook Pro, 16-Inch, 2021

Chip Apple M1 Pro

Memory 16 GB

macOS Sonoma 14.3.1

I use a MX Master mouse and MX Keys Bluetooth keyboard. The MX Mouse is plagued by a hardware issue that can be fixed by opening the mouse and adjusting a tension screw… however if others are experiencing the problem with other devices, this may be OS related.

Recently, I noticed that the mic icon appears in my Finder tool bar, randomly, as if some process is firing off in the background that is interfering with Bluetooth. Randomly, my mouse cursor stutters and jumps around for seemingly no reason.

If I rediscover the solution, I will make a YouTube video on my channel (@wepiphany). Has anyone found a solution or cause?

I agree with you that it is not something you can fix "on your Mac," but it is fixable.

It is almost 2 months from when I applied my fix from the post -> How to fix choppy audio on MacBook Pro wi… - Apple Community

and it's still working.

I'm thinking that Apple just waits until all 2.4Ghz networks die (will be upgraded to 5Ghz or wifi6), and then everything should work flawlessly :)

In addition to the above, I want to spill my frustration.

This is the last Mac I own!

It is absurd to pay this amount of money and not be able to attach as many devices as I want and need. The fact that I can't connect more than one external screen to my MacBook Air is also absurd.

I don't need a MacBook Pro. I love the silence of M1 Air, and I can swallow its price.

There is no perfect "laptop". There is no perfect OS.

For quite some time, I thought that MacOS was the least bad, but it just started losing. It's no longer worth the "premium"!

I'm returning to Linux for my next Upgrade.
