Printer stopped- 'filter' failed message

Is a message I get when trying to print with OS 10.15.7 using my old MacBook Pro and old Canon i9900 inkjet printer. I am prepared to just get rid of the printer, but I have a feeling I might be able work out this problem. (Just trying to use it as long as I can)... I actually had two of these printers, and when the ink resevoir on the one which had the best print head was entirely full and could no longer be bypassed it stopped working altogether. I took the remaining inks and print head and transferred them to the other printer which I had found would work fine but was way out of whack for colors and it was obvious it was a clogged print head. That is when I found the above message. All my research says the driver should not have worked in OS 10.15.7 and thus the reason for the code, except that it had been working for a long time. Also the i9900 driver keeps ending up on my desktop. Where does it really belong? Is that why the message is showing up, Or should I trash the driver? Any ideas?

You're welcome! It is annoying when a printer cannot be used under a more modern operating system, just because a manufacturer does not provide updated drivers. Often, the only way is to keep one or two older computers for compatibility reasons.

Since you have a new printer, you may even decide to carry out a few additional experiments with the old i9900 (even though you run the risk of losing the existing printer software). Such as testing whether the Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard driver from Canon (link above) could be of any use at all (do not expect it to work). Before doing anything, make sure that you have backup copies of all important files (documents, photos, etc). Software conflicts cannot be ruled out.

It may be a good idea to reset the printing system between tests:

Hi,

The latest supported Mac printer driver for the i9900 from Canon appears to be for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Sometimes, a driver will work with some subsequent operating system versions as well.

Apparently, there is an experimental Gutenprint driver for the i9900, but it is unclear whether it would work with macOS 10.15 Catalina. Also, the normal recommendation is always to download drivers from a printer manufacturer, or from another trustworthy source (such as Apple). Anything else would be at your own risk. Do not download from unknown "support" sites (often with misleading names).

Thanks for your answer. I have no idea why it kept working until today, but I've been prepared for a long time for it to quit, and bought a cheap little one to replace it until I get a new laptop. Thanks for such a quick answer. It's kinda hard not to wear things out, but instead to have them stop being supported or able to be fixed by their software updates.
