Filter Failed -- OS 10.15.7

My wife's MBA can no longer print directly to our networked HP 4350 LaserJet. I've gone through all of the "delete printer", "add printer", "reset printer system", "restart MBA"... In fact, the problem first showed up today on the MBA running OS 10.14.xx and after replicating the problem, I moved forward and updated the MBA to 10.15.7...

The print jobs (various applications / files), all APPEAR to print -- they even show up in the completed jobs list -- but no print job appears to show up at the printer.

I've tried using generic printer features option without success. (Unfortunately, I do not have another printer available, so I can't isolate whether or not it is a HP-specific driver problem.)

The MBA is able to print to the HP 4350 when I share the printer from my MBP and prints to the shared printer.

Seems like some driver / PPD file on the MBA is corrupted -- just can't figure out which one(s)... or, how to replace suspected files.

Suggestions?

Restore or Contact HP:

A. Restore from a Backup:

Have you recently created a backup of your Mac? if so, restore from the backup.

If no Backup...

B. Contact HP:

Perform a chat session with HP - See if they can run you through the fix:

  1. Go Here: HP Virtual Agent
  2. Enter: your information
  3. Proceed from there as necessary

TheLittles -- Being fortunate these past several years, I have not had the need (or thought) to restore the OS from the built-in Restore Disk <---- This was the ultimate solution...

Here's the path taken:

  • Triggered TimeMachine to make an immediate backup now. (It's been connected for a while and always making a backup... This is a good reminder to those who haven't set up TimeMachine.) Unfortunately, with my network-based Drobo Time Machine backup and a MBA connected via wi-fi, it took 13+ HOURS for the backup to complete (17.0 GB) -- probably so large due to the recent update from OS 10.14.x to 10.15.7... Wow... How long would a restore from backup take??? There had to be a faster way.
  • So, I connected the MBA to the MBP via USB-3 cable and used Migration Assistant to transfer the user only. This only took several minutes.
  • Performed a "test print" from the transferred user on the MBP. Voilà -- It worked! (So this strongly hinted that the problem was with the OS and/or settings on the MBA.)
  • Next step was RESTORING THE OS FROM THE BUILT-IN RECOVERY DISK on the MBA. This also only took about 30 minutes.
  • Performed a "test print" from the MBA directly to the networked printer. Voilà -- It's ALIVE!

Bottom line... In this case, performing the BACKUP added the necessary ease of mind and is a recommended step while troubleshooting -- since restoring the OS from a recovery disk can always go bad and may cause the total loss of the drive contents. Fortunately, the BACKUP was not used in the recovery.

Thanks for triggering my brain. Consider this CLOSED!
