HDMI STOPPED WORKING POST IOS 16.2 UPDATE

Hey I have an issue I can’t seem to find a solution for. I have updated my iPhone 11

(IOS 16.2) and iPad 6th generation (IOS 16.2) recently.

Now my HDMI with adapter stopped working when I try to watch a show off the iPad or iPhone onto the Tv, either I get audio with no video when on Hdmi with adapter or when I cast to the Smart TV I get video but no audio.

My wife’s iPhone 8 and iPad 4th generation work just fine when using the HDMI with adapter.

I have tried all the solutions I could find via google search and apple solutions.

(most seem to be solutions from early 2022 late 2021)

Curious if anyone else has run into this with the latest IOS updates. If so what did you do to fix it.

Hello, I have been exploring fixes for this problem since latest update as well. These are the steps I have taken to unsuccessfully resolve issues. Note I am using an Apple HDMI adapter in working order prior to update.

(1) reset phone

(2) checked connections

(3) updated software on smart tv

(4) updated all streaming apps

(5) tucked tail between legs and excepted defeat

It became clear after all my efforts that it most likely is a problem with the specific apps we are using. I was prompted by Disney+ to update my software. After both phone and Disney app were updated no problems exist with streaming. No other streaming app will perform even after latest version is installed. All apps have different issues from no audio, glitches in video, constant buffering, or inability to load at all, but all apps run fine on phone screen until the adapter is inserted.

Conclusion, I think we need to focus are energy in getting answers towards app developers instead of looking for answers from Apple.

TON1967,

Thank you for getting back to us. There isn't a purposeful plan to disrupt non-Apple adapters of any type. There are industry standards that we ask all devices to adhere to and the system will check for those standards. Sometimes a software update will include a more detailed check of devices and a borderline device that met earlier check doesn't meet the stricter checks. If you have further questions, you can contact Apple Support to discuss your options.

Cheers.

Hi TON1967,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

Since you're not getting audio or video when using the HDMI adapter with iPad or iPhone, try the recommended steps from Apple.

"If you see video but can't hear audio

Make sure that you're using a Digital AV adapter (which has an HDMI port). If you're using a VGA adapter, it doesn't carry audio signals. To hear audio with a VGA adapter, you need to connect to the headset jack on your TV, monitor, projector, or stereo.

If an app doesn't display video or play audio

The app might not be compatible with your adapter. Check compatibility on the app's info page in the App Store or contact the developer.

If an alert says that an HDCP-compatible device is required

Your content might not be compatible with your adapter. Movies, TV shows, and certain streaming video apps require High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). If you try to play these movies, shows, and streaming videos using a non-HDCP digital connection—like the Apple VGA Adapter—an alert will ask for an HDCP-compatible device.

If you need help with other issues

  1. Disconnect and reconnect your adapter from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and from your TV, monitor, or projector.
  2. Make sure that your VGA or HDMI cable works, since the issue could be with the cable.
  3. Remove any VGA or HDMI extension cables or converters. Accessories that convert a VGA or HDMI signals to different video formats (DVI, Composite, Component) aren't compatible.
  4. Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS.

You can find these steps in About Apple Digital AV Adapters for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Regards.

There have been a number of threads describing this issue. Certain streaming services work and others don't. Talk a look at the "Similar questions". Many people are of the opinion that it was an intentional change.

Maybe I should be asking if there is a way to revert back to a IOS 15 software update, at least until Apple has sorted out the issue with the IOS 16.2 update.

That is not an option. Downgrading is no supported.

You can let Apple know your thoughts on the matter here:

I’ve had the same issue since updating to the IOS 16. I can see & hear everything fine on YouTube but not Amazon or Hulu. I can see the picture fine but no sound. I always use the hdmi lightning cable from my phone to my smart tv using AirPlay. I don’t have internet & rely on cellular data. Apple has been no help at all & act like they’ve never heard if the issue. They said my paid subscriptions are what’s blocking everything due to security issues. I bought a new iPhone 14 Pro Max to no avail. I now have to use my iPad to get it to work because I haven’t done the update on it. I even brought a new hdmi cable which didn’t make any difference. I’m very frustrated!!

Hey while I appreciate the effort to solve the issue albeit pretty pat answers.

These have already been tried by myself, prior to coming here.

The fact of the matter is that my wife’s iPhone and iPad work just fine with the HDMI cable and HDMI adapter.

It all was working just fine prior to me updating my phone to the latest version. The difference between my wife’s phone and iPad versus mine is the update to 16.2 IOS.

Maybe I should be asking if there is a way to revert back to a IOS 15 software update, at least until Apple has sorted out the issue with the IOS 16.2 update. It really doesn’t take too much investigating to see I am not the only one seeing this issue with the latest software update and the ability to mirror to a TV using a hdmi adapter and cable.

Thank you Y_Town_75

if you noticed earlier threads you would have seen that the adapter and HDMI cable have been proven to

work on apple devices that have not upgraded to the IOS 16 software.

I am truly seeking a solution for the chronic issue associate with the update, as are many of the people on this community discussion.

Please after fully reading and digesting the issue at hand, offer up a workable solution so that we can all move on from this disruption.
