CarPlay keeps getting disconnected via USB cable

I am trying to set up my parents' new car. They live in Europe and drive a 2022 Dacia Sandero Stepway III. The car comes with the CarPlay feature but for some reason it keeps getting disconnected and I cannot figure out why. It connects, but after a few minutes it disappears, and you need to unplug the phone and plug it back. l I used two iPhone 12 Pro and two iPhone 13 minis, all are updated, iOS 16.2. I tried all the tricks that I could find online, and nothing works. The car has the most updated system version. The Bluetooth connection seems to be fine. It's the USB cable connection that is causing issues. BTW, I just bought a brand-new Apple cable. Anyone in a similar situation?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 16

I don't think so that's the reason. In my Dacia Logan III 2022 (same head unit) car I have tried with 2x iPhone 13 Pro and every 2 3 minutes wired connection get dropped. With iPhone 11 is working just fine.

With wireless adaptor for CarPlay is working fine even with my 13 Pro, but with wireless connection I have issues with the connection at the beginning, when entering the car (black screen and so on, might be the adaptor)

I am keep waiting for some miraculous update to iOS or car head unit.

Dear all. After sending letter with very tricky question: "did you know about the problem before selling the car?" to Dacia, Renault Group send official email to (probably) all distributors/dealers in Poland about the problem *after 3-4 years knowing about it... I won't even comment it. At least my dealer got it.

Nevertheless, they are working on the solution. What they know now is that this one wire does not disconnect: Kabel VIGGO DESIGN USB LIGHTNING MFI C89 1m. You can buy it here: https://www.neo24.pl/viggo-design-usb-lightning-mfi-c89-1m.html, sorry I could not find it outside PL.

Note: REMEMBER - this wire is a temporary solution, car manufacturer/dealer NEEDS and is OBLIGED to fix the issue to work on ANY wire you connect, even if it requires replacing entire device. And the cost is to be paid by seller.

I got a confirmation from the dealer that the fault is within Dacia/LG. the problem is (according to them) is with the to high power from the USB port. It is from iPhone 12 till 14. Everything below 12 works fine. They are working on a solution, that will be ready (hold your breath) somewhere in the end of the year.

I use a originale lightning cable with a car relay between it. The car keeps connected, but the phone does not charge.

This work around is not fine for me and after a complain (several) at the dealer the will send me a dongel for free. This is approved by Renault itself. Hope to recive the dongel soon.

For all of those who are still dealing with the issue of wired connection of CarPlay with iPhone 14/13 and Dacia Media Display,

I found another cable that's working fine (that "Eono" brand is no longer available). It is the "Anker Powerline+ III USB-A Cable with Lightning Connector". It must be precisely this type (which is a little more expensive: about 15 euros), because I've tried also The Powerline II which didn't work.

It could be something about the data transfer speed: this one I mentioned has 480 mbps transfer rating.

Thanks for your thoughts. I have been in discussion with my Dacia (Media Nav) ref the Car play function. After 11 months and various Software updates, pictures, error logs sent to Dacia /Renault they basically gave up and said fault is with Apple and nothing more they could do!! I got my system to work with a full reset and Not enabling the built in Nav maps. Now works ok🤞🤨

Thank you your input. After posting the question here I found out the CarPlay is not actually supported in Romania apparently. It is on the car display as a feature, so I am not sure how since officially is not supported. They give the tutorial on how to connect your phone etc. It is in the car’s instructions manual but after checking Apple.com for compatibility I don’t know why they are advertising it when is not technically supported. I will email both the car manufacturer and Apple support and hopefully someone will answer my questions.

To date (June 2023) the only workaround is that precise type of lightning cable that has been already posted (“eono” brand) which you can easily find on a very famous e-commerce platform whose name ends in …zon… at about 10 dollars. I’m using it from April …no disconnections on iPhone 14 pro max… (I’ve tried half a dozen of different other cables, MFI certified, with C89 terminals, no one functioned) .

Background: I had a Dacia Sandero as a rental in Portugal. This is not a solution, but I found it to be an acceptable workaround. First, get a good cable (in my case, I got a Belkin). Second (and this in my case became very important): make sure the MediaNav unit is OFF *before* plugging your Iphone into the car’s USB port. Once the phone is plugged, then you can turn the MediaNav on and the new Carplay connection should appear in the MediaNav screen. On your iphone, a notice will pop up asking your permission to have CarPlay use your phone even while it is locked (obviously accept that). Following this sequence, there were practically no disconnections. On the few occasions where the phone got disconnected, something external was added to the “mixture” (e.g. I would have to turn off the car for some reason, etc etc). Whenever this happened, plugging the phone back in (with unit off) would make a new stable connection. If for some reason the phone was not recognized, I deleted the carplay connection, reset my Iphone and tried the sequence again. This solved almost all of those instances. On 2 rare occasions, the phone was not recognized but I left the car off and parked for a few minutes and executed the plugging sequence again and it was recognized.

Like I said, this is *not* a solution but it is indeed a workaround. I got a stable connection 98% of the time this way. I don’t know whether having the car on or off makes a difference, but the on/off status of the MediaNav certainly does.

I emailed Dacia and they said this:

This situation was reported by other iPhone users and investigated by our technical team. After continued tests the technical team was able to establish that the origin of this issue is on Apple’s side and Renault has been working closely with them to solve this. The solution will likely be in the form of a iOS update.

waiting for updates then..

I have the same problem with my iPhone 12. What i got new software for my Dacia media Display (6.0.9.9) but that did not solve the issue. The only thing that helpt so far is tot put a car relais between the lightning cable, a power step down adaptor did not do the trick. According to my car dealer the issue is that the usb port gives too much power to my iPhone. with the relais installed you can use CarPlay with the cable, but it will not charge the phone. I a had a replaced car for a day, because of maintains. It was also the same type sandero, only the media display software was 6.0.9.7 and my phone worked fine!

Dacia keeps pointing towards apple to come with a solution (but I think its more a Dacia thing)

sinds my problem apple released iOS 16.3.1 and 16.4 and even with the combo of the new dacia software it still doesn’t work.

hope you can all follow me (English writing is not my daily thing as a Dutch guy)

Same problem with my CarPlay! How I resolved, as follows…

  1. Within head unit. Perform a complete reset of the system..select all option for reset.
  2. during reset, then do not select the onboard navigation option.
  3. On phone… Update to latest version, remove all CarPlay connections and reboot phone.
  4. reestablish CarPlay connections on phone with vehicle.
  5. Start and try.
  6. No navigation; however other better navigation apps on phone via car play.

feedback would be appreciated if works for you? Tks . Aquaman
