Notifications about virus

Every few minutes a notification pops up on the upper right corner of my monitor warning about a virus or some other problem with my computer. It stays for a second or two, too fast for me to read it all. I asked Apple at their phishing address but the response was computer generated and obviously not responsive to how to stop them. These are really annoying, and look very official. Do you know how I can stop them without ending perhaps significant warnings? (The options below don't allow for Mac 14.")

These notifications are caused by website notifications in Safari.

To fix it, go to Safari > Settings > Websites > Notifications and remove whatever site seems most likely to be generating those. If you can't figure it out, feel free to remove all of them. This will trigger web sites to ask again. Now that you know where to look, you will be better able to find out which site is causing it.

Thanks, everyone. I'm convinced, and I see now that the link I sent you is an ad for a competing product. I was concerned because I'm always afraid to download anything not sold by Apple despite understanding that it might be because Apple takes too big a cut. I'll get back to you when I can find the time to download and run it thru EtreCheck.

Thank you too.

Below is directed as a general posting on the usage of Etrecheck and in Not Intended specifically to anyone individual.

To be fair, the OP is prudent to question downloading Software from outside the Apple Store.

Though, the notion that everything from the Apple Store is safe and will not potentially perform harmful things to the computer should be exposed IMHO

What the Application may do to the computer is up to the User to check this out before purchase.

Case in point, being the infamous CleanMyMac aka BrickMyMac ( quoted term from a More Senior Contributor) which does appear in the Store.

This will include CleanMyMac

Read some of the posting and arrive at your own conclusions

It is interesting that some Entity quoted by OP cites Etrecheck as a bad actor software but seldom does one read similar about CleanMyMac is the same breath, except on these Forums

Thanks. I was surprised that you called it an "old" version, since I got the update notice only yesterday. I've updated it now, but am still getting those virus warnings. I probably do have a lot of junk on my computer. I tried to eliminate it by not transferring everything to my new computer, but just moving things one at a time. That didn't work well and most of the old stuff is still there. Should running EtreCheck again show me how to get rid of the low-level tasks, and would that have any relation to the notifications problem? Thanks.

I appreciate the help you and everyone else has been offering. I got the article you referred me to, force quit Safari, reopened it with the shift key down, but the notifications kept coming. I guess I'll have to try Apple Care. It takes so long with them, and since I'm deaf and use a captioned phone it does become a struggle to understand. Apple used to let me use the disability number where the tech people knew much better how to speak to a person with a severe hearing loss, but now they've restricted the line to issues with the disability functions of the Mac, not the caller's disability. I did a scan with Malwarebytes and downloaded the app you recommended. The scan found nothing.
