iPhone IOS 16 Notes Thumbnails

Hi

I frequently use the notes app and have lately noticed a new feature whereby a note shrinks in size to about 3/4” square. This slides off the lower right of the screen revealing a pull out arrow that you can click to reveal the note. It looks like a good feature but I’ve not been able to find anny explanation of how it works. The thumbnails seem to appear and disappear randomly.

Any help on explaining his new feature would be much appreciated.

thank you

thanl you,

Hi Tholley55,

Thanks for the screenshots. What you're describing is the Quick Notes feature. This link has some good general detail about it for your reference: Create Quick Notes anywhere on iPhone - Apple Support

"Create Quick Notes anywhere on iPhone

You can use Quick Notes to jot down information over any app or screen on iPhone. Add links, images, tags, and mentions to a Quick Note so you can get to important names, numbers, and ideas easily. When you highlight text in Safari or add a link from an app, you see a Quick Note thumbnail next time you visit the site, taking you right to what you were viewing before.

You can access all your Quick Notes in the Notes app. And when you make a Quick Note on your iPhone, you can see the note on your iPad and Mac, too.

Make a Quick Note

To start a Quick Note from any app, do any of the following:

  • Tap the Share button, then tap Add to Quick Note.
  • Open Control Center, then tap the Quick Note button.
  • (If you don’t see the Quick Note button, add it to Control Center—go to Settings  > Control Center, then choose Quick Note.)"

Thanks Rane77,

I reviewed the link and it was somewhat helpful. It’s not explained very well, but is a bit clearer. As I understand it, when you highlight text and create a quick note, it attaches (or links) the note to the source document or web page. When you return to that page, the note posts up. Conversely, if you tap the note from your notes folder, you are taken to the source document. The thumbnail “auto hides” or can be manually hidden (revealing only a small arrow) at the side while you are on the source doc. I’ve learned this mostly by trial and error in the absence of a proper online explanation.

Thank you Jmarse1 ! Actually, the issue has nothing to do with gallery view. If you select text on a web page, then use command “create quick note” you will get a note that shrinks to thumbnail and hides at the side of the screen with only an arrow showing. Attachéd are some photos to help explain. I’ve not found any explanation i regards to this significant feature.

Hi Tholley55,

We'll be glad to help you out with finding this. The closest thing resembling what you've described is the Gallery view in Notes.

"See your notes in Gallery view

Gallery view gives you a new way to see your notes — making it easier than ever to find the note you're looking for. Open a folder or list of notes, tap the More button More button, then tap View as Gallery.

To sort your notes inside of folders:

  1. Go to the folder that you want to sort.
  2. Tap the More button More button, then tap Sort Notes By.
  3. Choose how you want to sort your notes.

To sort all of your notes automatically, go to Settings > Notes, and tap Sort Notes By. Then choose how you want to sort your notes."

The following article shows all features of the Notes app in iOS, if you're referring to something else: Use Notes on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

We hope that helps.

Cheers.
