I can no longer confirm Apple TV purchases on my other devices

Apple TV's "confirm purchases on your other devices" worked perfectly for a year or so, but in the past month, when I choose "Confirm on your device," I never get the confirmation.

So far I have checked that my iPhone and Macbook Pro are on the same wifi network as the Apple TV. The iPhone and Macbook also both have bluetooth enabled.

The Apple TV software is set to update automatically, and my iPhone 12 Pro is iOS 16.1.2; Macbook is OS 13.0.1. (When I checked this they both notified me they'll be updating tonight, but that can't be it, as those are brand-new updates and it hasn't been working for a month.)

What should I try next?

  • Verify that all these devices have the same Apple ID account. For devices that allow for multiple accounts (like Apple TV (4th generation or later)), verify that the matching account is active.
  • Verify that your router doesn’t unintentionally manage multiple subnets, where devices on one part (SSID network name) cannot communicate with devices on a different part. Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points - Apple Support.
  • Bluetooth isn’t needed for this. It works with bluetooth turned off.
  • Verify that it didn’t take too long, as the notification disappears after 2 minutes.

Use an Apple device to sign in or make purchases on Apple TV - Apple Support

It says to work for the Apple TV box and Apple mobile devices; your MacBook Pro is not supported for this function.

When it works, first you would get a notification alert on iPhone. Clicking that would bring up the confirmation interface with instructions. Double-clicking the side button would confirm the purchase, followed by a Face ID authentication to complete it.

The Apple TV software is set to update automatically …

Do verify the version though, as some users noticed that they were a few versions behind unintentionally.
