Apple Card is Using My Checking Account

I just purchased an app (FAX) and was asked if I wanted to use Apple Pay to pay the subscription. I double-clicked on my iPhone to confirm and the amount was immediately deducted from my checking/debit account at my bank. What gives? I wanted it taken from my Apple Card account. What's wrong here? Where do I change the Apple Pay settings to use Apple Card as the default? Thanks!

You'll need to change the method of payment on your Apple account, appleid.apple.com. Or, select the Apple Card option from the Apple Pay menu if available before authorizing the purchase.
