i dragged a folder and replaced an old one

Oh my goodness😭 Can someone tell me if I have any hope of recovering my illustrator file and picture file??

i had a folder called “support” and it had an illustrator file that I had worked on for hours and also a photo that I had linked in the Ai file and that photo is no longer available on the internet.

i dragged and dropped another folder called “support” with other content and accidentally replaced the first one 😭😭😭😭😭😭

i tried to check Time Machine but apparently I had never set it up ???? So I don’t see previous days to restore to.

then I downloaded Disk Drill and I did a full search on my external hard drive but I couldn’t find the files I was missing.

i even clicked cmd + shift + . In order to show hidden folders and I checked the trash folder on my external hard drive but it wasn’t there either 😭😭😭😭😭😭 what can I do???

A simple first step to recover from doing something you regret is to use Undo:

There are multiple levels of "undo" meaning you can keep repeating it until the actions were undone. However, there is a limit, and the more subsequent actions you perform the more likely it becomes the initial mistake is long gone rendering those actions unrecoverable.

If you have an OMG moment the first thing to do is Undo.

Time Machine is the ultimate "undo". To learn how to use it please read Back up your files with Time Machine on Mac - Apple Support. The best time to start using would have been prior to making that mistake. The second best time is now.
