I keep changing the default account for contacts from Gmail to iCloud and then later when I try to create a new contact from a phone number in Messages, for example, I check and it was added to Gmail. Then I check the settings for my default account and sure enough, it changed back to Gmail when I know I had fixed it to be iCloud. This keeps happening! How can this be fixed?
Thank you for getting back to me. Yes iCloud is set to the default account and there is enough space space. But after some time, if I go back to the Contact settings the default account is Gmail and I have to change it back to iCloud.
Thank you, but I already updated all of my devices trying to troubleshoot a syncing problem Friday, so it’s not that either! It feels like a bug that Apple needs to look into. Something is triggering the change and it’s not me manually changing it.

Let's use the steps below to make sure your iPhone is up to date:
1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

To start, let's check: Settings > Contacts > Default Account: Make sure there's a check mark next to iCloud. If not, select that option now.
Next, make sure there's enough space available in iCloud: Settings > Tap your name at the top > iCloud. If there's not enough storage, you may run into an issue adding Contacts or other data.
