Text messaging on iPhone 14 Pro Max

I am unable to start a text message by choosing a contact first…it crashes as I’m typing a contacts name. I am only able to reply to someone who has already texted me.

I have allowed SMS. The system has been updated. I have done a hard reset. It has been acting this way for about a month now.

Can anyone help please?

SMS is allowed or disallowed by your Carrier. There is nothing in the settings to enable or disable SMSs

If you are referring to this --> "Send as SMS" when enabled and when your device is not connected to the internet the iMessage will be sent automatically as an SMS assuming you have an SMS plan enabled by your Carrier.

iMessage (Blue) -

  • iPhone to iPhone: requires internet (Either over WiFi or Cellular Service) as it is sent over internet protocol. Needs Activation on your device.
  • iPhone to Android: Not available

SMS/MMS (Green) -

  • iPhone to Android: does not require any internet it is sent over cellular voice protocol. Needs to be enabled by your Carrier for the SIM used by you.
  • iPhone to iPhone: When iMessage is not activated or the device is not connected to the internet either over cellular or WiFi

It will turn from Blue to Green if you have enabled "Send as SMS" and whenever your iPhone is not connected to the internet it is sent as SMS (green) to all iPhone users.
