delete originals when deleting photo album

Since there are only select photos, which are sorted into albums, that I'd like to delete, surely there is a way to delete the originals when deleting the album? I've looked at answers from years ago that simply say "Command-Option-Delete" but that doesn't work for me! Has something changed?

In Photos for Mac select the photos in the album all together with ⌘A, then use the keyboard shortcut ⌘⌫ , not ⌘⌥⌫.

This should work, because the holding down the command key while deleting will change the binding of ⌫ from "remove from album" to "delete photos".

The photos in the album should not be clubbed in a folder that is created under the album , select the photos move three fingers from left to right on trackpad or use command and A keys , and delete .

Create and work with albums in Photos on Mac - Apple Support

Remove photos from an album: Select the photos, then press Delete, or choose Image > Remove [number] Photos from Album.

The photos are removed only from this album, not from other albums in your photo library.

Note: You can’t delete photos from a Smart Album or from the albums created for you, such as Videos or Bursts. The photos are added to these albums automatically based on the search criteria of the album. You can delete selected photos from your entire library and iCloud Photos by pressing Command-Delete.

Hi CaitThorn,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

This article outlines how to delete photos from iCloud: Delete and recover photos and videos on iCloud.com.

"When you delete a photo or video from Photos on iCloud.com, it’s also deleted from all your devices that have iCloud Photos turned on. If you change your mind, you have 30 days to recover it before it’s permanently deleted.

Delete photos and videos

  1. In Photos on iCloud.com, select the photos or videos you want to delete, or double-click a single photo or video.
  2. Click the Delete button, then click Delete.
  3. Deleted photos and videos are moved to the Recently Deleted album.
  4. To permanently delete photos or videos before they’re automatically deleted, go to the Recently Deleted album, select the items you want to delete, then click Delete [number] Items.

We aren't quite clear what you mean when you said you wanted a way to delete the originals. If this isn't exactly what you were looking for, please provide further details regarding the issue.

Have a fantastic day!

CaitThorn,

You would need to delete them from the original location as well. Follow these steps to see if they resolve the issue: Delete photos or recover deleted ones in Photos on Mac

"Delete photos and videos

  1. In the Photos app  on your Mac, select the items you want to delete.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Delete selected photos and videos in Days view: Press Delete, then click Delete. The selected items are deleted from your library and placed in the Recently Deleted album.
    • Delete photos and videos from an album, but not from your library: Press Delete. The selected items are deleted from the album only and remain in your library.
    • Delete photos and videos from a Smart Album (for example, Last Import, Favorites, or Videos):Press Command-Delete. The selected items are deleted from your library and placed in the Recently Deleted album.
    • Delete photos and videos and then permanently remove them from the Recently Deleted album:Press Command-Delete, then open the Recently Deleted album. (If the Recently Deleted album is locked, use Touch ID or enter your password to unlock it.) Select the items you want to delete permanently, click Delete, then click OK."

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Thank you for that wonderful information, K_Faith! I think the one that’s missing is (sadly) the answer I need. All photos are nicely sorted into albums. All photos in those specific albums need to be deleted. Having to find each of them individually would be so much work, since they were taken and uploaded at different times! Since they’re already nicely sorted is there a way to delete their original without having to go and individually find the original for each photo in the album? Was that one of the options you listed and maybe I just didn’t understand?
