Watching sports or anything is frustrating if you like to pause the stream to go back and read the screen. On pause the ATV dims the screen so you can’t see then it pastes a giant program banner over 1/3 of the screen. Unreadable.

Pausing doesn’t appear to obscure much in the Apple TV app with tvOS 16.2.
It may be different for other apps, but that is up to each app developer.
