I am trying to check an external drive that won’t mount running fsck. I have had a vertical of y flags for 20 hrs. Very occasionally the screen flashes full screen for half a second or so. Should I stop the process? If so how ? Thanks in advance.
iMac 27″, macOS 12.6
Hold the power button until the iMac shuts off.
Disconnect the external drive.
Turn the iMac back on.
killall
Are there any failed process showing in Force Quit or in Activity Monitor?
If so, then you can Quit a failed process from either of those locations.
What happens if you unplug the external drive?
What App/Process are you using to run repairs on the external drive?
go to the Apple on the menu bar and select Force Quit
highlight the failed Application in red and click Force Quit
unplug the external drive, then toss or reconnect and try again
I turned off the iMac withe power button. I opened the hard drive a boot camp mac and the drive contents are all there. I am now attempting to repair the drive under windows 10. Many thanks for taking the time to give me feedback. Bonne Dimanche.
I'm not much of a Command Line user, but yes I would kill the process.
What external drive do you have and why are you running repairs on it...?
I am trying to repair a 4 tb external drive that was formated in Fat 32. The drive shows up but it is not accessible. Drive Utility does not work hence I try with fsck. If I must stop the process how can I do it please?
Thanks for getting back to me. I am using command Line after inputting /sbin/fsck -fy. Can I / should I stop I stop the process ?
Unfortunately, there are no options to force quit, no activity monitor. Just minimal black screen with vertical y flags. If I disconnect the drive would that be problematic ?
