Hi,
Since I updated to ventura among many other issues the sound icon has disappeared from the menu bar and cannot be added back from preference system. The option has actually completely disappeared.
Does any one know a work round this ? Or if it's a known bug or yet another brilliant idea to make things less and less intuitive and practical ?

This does exist. It, like many other things, have been shuffled around.
First, there is the Control Center menu extra. It now has sound controls available in the default complication. See here (showing sound set to Mute):
However, if you still want the old-school Sound menu extra, follow these steps:
1: Open System Preferences
2: Select Control Center from the side bar
3: Set the Sound option to "Always Show in Menu Bar"
