I found the earlier discussion -- it was for iOS Australian English. I guess they use the same buggy layout in both platforms.

Please don't take offence, but there are other ways to enter these latin characters and accents.

For example, to type the ñ character, just hold down the option key and type (wait for it...) the "n" key. That will display the modifier. Then you can pick any tilde-accented character you want, such as ã, õ, or even ñ.

I'm not sure why people are so attached to that pop-up menu that Apple ported from the iPhone. The most common complaint is that it doesn't work at all. There are a number of tricks and hacks that may or may not get it working again. And for some reason, people seem to get very upset at the idea of using a faster, alternative method. Perhaps that's why Apple added the pop-up menu. But I still don't understand it.

What is your input source? I seem to remember another post where the particular input source was the problem.

That's almost certainly the case. OMM (US-English), I see:

Not sure how to make it available in Australian English, but enabling a secondary language to your settings may be part of it.

What input source are you using in System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input?

I meant what are your settings? Also, what Preferred Languages do you have set?

I agree, but I am ancient, everyone in my generation learned touch typing in secondary school. Most people these days do not, they learn on a phone or tablet, they look at the keys, and it seems that speed is not valued nearly as highly as it used to be. Some day option key shortcuts may go the way of windows 3-digit ALT codes (hope not), and AI will guess which special character you wanted.

For those that I type once a year, when I’m trying to be clever (hors d’œuvres), the pop-up works fine. It is much more common for me to use the full character picker.
